The site for this project is the alley at 7th and Mateo in the Los Angeles Arts District. This is a rapidly
developing area that is adjacent to the LA River and Skid Row, resulting in a complex entanglement of diverse
populations giving rise to issues of equity and social justice. The goal of the project is to develop a green alley
design proposal that prioritizes ecological porosity; this includes but is not limited to: integrating stormwater management strategies, enhancing biodiversity, and modulating shade, air, sound, and other
atmospheric qualities. Ecological considerations should naturally invite other types of porosity such as social,
cultural, and sensorial.
